Do girls get better grades at an all girls’ school?

When choosing a school for your child many parents consider the average grade as a key performance indicator. However, finding the right school might seem more daunting today, due to ever growing pressures on young girls. 

Looking at the average grade at a school may help you decide which schools you wish to view. There are many differences between mixed schools and single sex schools.

Average grade achieved at an all girls’ school at GCSE level

On average, girls perform better in an all girls’ school during their GCSEs. A total of 75% of girls at single-sex school achieved 5 good GCSE results, including Maths and English.

Average grade achieved at a mixed school at GCSE level

The average for mixed schools is that around 55% of girls obtain five good GCSEs including English and Maths. 

In 2021, the UK government showed that in mixed schools only 30% of pupils achieved a grade 7 or above, equivalent to an A or above. Whereas, 79% achieved a grade 4; equivalent to C or above.

Access to education

In an all girls’ school, girls have access to all aspects of education. While mixed schools may offer similar courses and extracurricular activities, it can be daunting for young girls to enter subjects and activities that are male dominated.

In an all girls’ school these anxieties are removed.

Collaboration and communication

Girls thrive in a collaborative and communicative environment. All girls’ schools cater to this and encourage open discussions during classes,with girls able to be themselves and are more open to others around them than in mixed schools. 

Girls are more likely to achieve better grades during their time at an all girls’ school, with cultural and environmental and cultural factors being key reasons as to why this is.
