Our Ethos & Values: Preparing for Life, in a Kind Way
At St Margaret’s Hampstead, our unique approach to education is captured by our motto, 'Ad Vitam Paramus' - Latin for “Preparing for Life.” This is more than a slogan; it is a philosophy that guides everything we do. As described by The Good Schools Guide, we offer a “cosy, nurturing, rounded and grounded education delivered in a happy family atmosphere”.
We believe that a truly transformative education balances academic rigour with a profound commitment to personal wellbeing, preparing girls not just for examinations, but for a life of confidence, resilience and intellectual curiosity. In the competitive educational landscape of North London, we offer a different path – a kinder way of getting there.

“Afford them time to offer more help to each girl in the room”– ISI Inspection
The heart of our community: exceptional pastoral care
Our commitment to pastoral care is at the heart of our school's identity. The appointment of our new Head, Sharron Shackell, whose background is rooted in pastoral leadership, sends a clear message about our dedication to this core value.
Our intimate scale is the secret to our success. With an average class size of 14, and an excellent pupil-to-teacher ratio, every girl is known, seen and supported.
Our genuine family feel is an organic, lived experience, creating an environment where every girl has an innate sense of belonging and feels safe to take on new challenges. This is evidenced by an ISI inspection report, which found that pupils reported that our "effective pastoral care systems help them to find a resolution" when issues arise.
For girls with moderate learning needs such as dyslexia or dyspraxia, our small classes are our primary mechanism of support. The majority of girls' needs are addressed directly by their teachers, as our ISI report highlight the small class sizes "afford them time to offer more help to each girl in the room". This integrated approach ensures that personalised care is a core part of daily instruction.

Academic excellence without the pressure
In a city defined by selective entry, we are proud to be a non-selective school with excellent academic outcomes. Our GCSE results are a testament to our approach, with 65 per cent of grades in 2025 at 9–7.
What truly sets us apart is our proven ability to add significant value. Value-added data, stretching back over a decade, shows that St Margaret's Hampstead girls make notably more progress than pupils of similar abilities attending other schools. This is the ultimate proof that our nurturing environment is a direct driver of academic success.
By deliberately avoiding the often-crushing pressure of going through the 11+ transfer process, we are free to focus on instilling a deep love for learning. This gives our girls the confidence to take risks and try for high-achieving schools post-GCSE.
The St Margaret’s girl
Our ethos culminates in the character of our students. A St Margaret's girl is confident, resilient and grounded, with an innate sense of belonging.
We celebrate every achievement, whether in academics, sports or the arts, and recognise that each girl will take her own individual path to success. Our personalised approach, enabled by our small classes, ensures that every girl's unique talents and aspirations are seen, supported and celebrated.
The result is a community where kindness and respect are paramount, and where every girl is prepared for a life of purpose and contribution.
