A Warm Welcome From Our Head Sharron Shackell

It is with immense pride and excitement that I introduce myself as the Head of St Margaret’s Hampstead. Stepping into this role, I am deeply committed to upholding and enriching the unique spirit that defines our school – a place where every girl is truly known, valued and inspired to achieve her personal best.

My educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that a truly exceptional education balances rigorous academic pursuit with comprehensive pastoral care. I believe that when girls feel genuinely happy, secure and understood, they are empowered to embrace challenges, explore their passions and develop into confident, compassionate and well-rounded individuals ready for the world beyond our gates. This holistic approach, nurturing both intellectual curiosity and emotional resilience, is at the very heart of St Margaret’s Hampstead.

Head's Welcome

A foundation of experience & dedication

On a personal note, I live in Hertfordshire with my husband and our three teenage daughters, giving me a deep understanding of the joys and complexities of family life and the importance of choosing the right educational home. My journey in education spans over two decades – a career dedicated to nurturing young minds and creating environments where students thrive. I earned a First Class degree in History and Politics from the University of Manchester, followed by my PGCE in History from the prestigious University of Cambridge. This strong academic foundation has underpinned my extensive teaching career.

Prior to joining St Margaret’s Hampstead, I served as Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Immanuel College in Bushey, Hertfordshire, an HMC all-through school. This role, alongside my previous position as Director of Sixth Form, has provided me with extensive expertise in both academic leadership and, crucially, in developing robust pastoral care systems that support the wellbeing of every student. My commitment to educational excellence extends beyond the classroom – I am also an Independent Schools Inspectorate inspector and have proudly served as a governor at the Royal Masonic School for Girls in Hertfordshire since 2019. These experiences offer me a unique perspective on best practices in independent education across the UK.

Nurturing future leaders in Hampstead

With its commitment to small classes and a personalised approach, St Margaret’s Hampstead offers an unparalleled environment for girls aged 4–16 to flourish. I am excited to build upon our legacy of academic achievement, ensuring our girls are exceptionally prepared for entry into leading Sixth Forms in London and beyond. We will continue to champion a vibrant co-curricular life, encouraging every girl to discover her unique talents in sports, arts and a diverse range of clubs.

My vision for St Margaret’s Hampstead is one of continuous growth – not just in academic results, but in the character, confidence and compassion of our students. We will continue to cultivate a strong, supportive community where girls feel empowered to be curious, kind and courageous, ready to make a positive impact on the world.
