A Creative Day in Nature

This week, the art rooms were left behind as the great outdoors became our studio instead! Pupils from Years 5, 6 and 7 took part in a wonderfully inspiring en plein air (painting outdoors) adventure on Hampstead Heath, immersing themselves in the beauty of nature while developing their landscape drawing skills. 

On Tuesday, Year 5 and Year 6 set off under bright blue skies and golden sunshine. With sunhats on and sketchbooks in hand, the girls embraced the warm weather, ready to capture the natural world around them. Sun safety was a priority, and it was wonderful to see majority of the girls come well-prepared, showing responsibility alongside their creativity. 

Later in the week, it was Year 7’s turn to step into the wild on Thursday. Although the day was cooler and cloudier, the atmosphere was just as magical. The soft light made the colours of the landscape even more striking, and the girls quickly found inspiration in the gentle rustle of leaves and the intricate textures of bark and wildflowers. 

Walking from school to the Heath, the girls took time to observe their surroundings, capturing a variety of elements through photography – from wide landscape views to detailed close-up shots. Once at the Heath, each girl found a quiet corner to sit, reflect and sketch what she saw, fully engaging with her environment in a calm and thoughtful way. 

We were incredibly impressed by the artistic confidence and enthusiasm on display. The girls showed a keen eye for detail and a real passion for the process of creating art directly from observation. It was a joy to see them so focused and expressive in their work. 

We hope this special trip has left a lasting impression and will continue to inspire the girls to seek creativity in the natural world around them. Whether through future artworks, class projects, or personal endeavours, we encourage them to keep looking closely, imagining freely and drawing with heart.
